Through the history people tend to develop the quality of living and to improve availability of the base resources (water, energy, communications …). With the consumption increase of the limited resources and enhanced people’s requirements, the new ICT technologies brought up a new concept for obtaining services and resources under the concept of “smart city”. The term “smart city” has no exclusive relevance although it was introduced in year 1998 as consequence of “smart” things – smart card, smart phone, … Today, a smart city has broader meaning and uses information and communication technologies to enhance quality, performance and interactivity of urban services, to reduce costs and resource consumption and to improve contact between citizens and government. Smart city applications are developed with the goal of improving the management of urban flows and allowing for real time responses to challenges in government services, transport and traffic, energy, water supply, health care creating a unique eco system. The main goal of the one day Symposium is to exchange ideas, thoughts and opinions of different players, academic staff, city authorities and business sector in reviewing existing situation, technology tendencies, main challenges and potential applications and solutions in supporting smart city concept in our country.

Smart cities: are we there yet? Experiences from smart city pilots

Abstract:

In this presentation an overview of smart city services piloted in the context of several FP7 and H2020 projects (SocIoTal, CLIPS, MobiWallet, WeLive, IoT Lab) will be presented, together with the experiences from both technical and social perspectives. Particular focus will be given to the activities for engaging people and collaborative definition of smart city services. An overview of potential activities in which the audience can get involved will be outlined as well. Smart cities - are we there yet?

Smart City: How far is the future?

Abstract:

The concept of Smart cities has emerged as a natural solution for expanding cities. It aims to enhance living and sustainability of densely populated environments through the use of emerging wireless ICT technologies and contributes to the paradigm shift towards the next digital networked society. This presentation reflects the basic concepts and highlights the most interesting solutions for Smart Cities worldwide. It compares the opportunities and potentials for realized solutions and comments on possible platforms for future implementations. It opens the question where are we and if Skopje has made the first steps?

Cloud and Fog Computing in IoT jungle: A Smart city example

Abstract:

This presentation gives an overview of technologies used for realization of the Smart City concept. Internet of Things includes various sensors and devices to collect information, while cloud and fog computing are used for extensive data processing in order to share the knowledge and make decisions in the smart city examples.
